CARING FOR OUR CHILDREN’S
VISION
March 7, 2006
Dear Colleague:
As Co-Chairs of the Congressional Vision Caucus and parents concerned with the well being of America’s children, we invite you to co-sponsor a resolution
encouraging the establishment of programs to increase public awareness of vision disorders in children.
Estimates indicate that millions of children in the U.S. suffer from vision disorders. Yet, no recent
nationwide study exists to accurately determine the percentage of children with
vision problems in our nation. Many cases go undetected or are misdiagnosed.
Vision impairment affects how a child experiences and functions in the world, adversely affecting their physical, emotional, and social development. Moreover,
the failure to detect, evaluate, and treat vision problems in children brings substantial costs to society and the government.
Join us in cosponsoring a resolution to encourage the establishment of programs to increase awareness of the prevalence and devastating consequences of vision
disorders in children, and to educate the public and healthcare providers about the warning signs and symptoms of ocular and vision disorders as well as the
benefits of early detection, evaluation, and treatment.
If you would like to become a cosponsor of this resolution, or for additional information, please contact Sarah Perez, (Rep.
Ros-Lehtinen) at 5-3931 or Lantie Ferguson Slenzak (Rep. Green) at 5-1688.
Sincerely,
Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, M.C. Gene Green, M.C.
